Building Dashboards
Notes:
Web is currently in feature preview and as such documentation for this feature is still work in progress
Creating and editing dashboards allows workspace administrators to build custom views of financial data tailored to specific needs. The dashboard editor provides a flexible environment for adding widgets, configuring filters, and arranging layouts.
Note:
Building and editing dashboards requires workspace administrator permissions.
Creating a New Dashboard
To create a new dashboard:
- Navigate to the dashboard list
- Click the Create a Dashboard button
- The dashboard editor opens with an empty grid ready for widgets
Dashboard Editor Components
Dashboard Name
The dashboard name field appears at the top of the editor. Enter a descriptive name that will be displayed in the dashboard list and when the dashboard is opened.
Editor Actions
The following actions are available when building a dashboard:
- Save: Saves the current state of the dashboard, including all widgets, filters, and layout
- Refresh: Recalculates all widgets with the current filter selections
- Delete: Removes the dashboard from the workspace (with confirmation prompt)
- Close: Returns to the dashboard list without saving any unsaved changes
Note:
Closing without saving will discard any changes made since the last save. A warning prompt appears if there are unsaved changes.
Static Filters
Static filters (Current Period, Comparative Scenario, Currency) are available in the editor for context while building the dashboard. These filters help preview how the dashboard will appear with different selections.
Important:
Static filter selections are NOT saved with the dashboard definition. When users open the dashboard, it inherits their current static filter selections.
Dynamic Filters
Dynamic filters added in the dashboard editor ARE saved with the dashboard definition. All users viewing the dashboard will have access to these filters as configured:
- Click the Add Filter button to add a dynamic filter
- Select the hierarchy and members to include in the filter
- Configure filter options and behavior
- The filter becomes part of the dashboard definition
Working with the Dashboard Grid
The dashboard grid is divided into:
- 24 columns across the width
- Three pages of 18 rows, with there being one page worth (18 rows) always displayed
Widgets can be placed anywhere in the grid and sized according to the dashboard design needs.
Adding Widgets
To add widgets to the dashboard:
- Click the Add Widgets button
- A widget selection dialog appears showing available widget types organized by category
- Select the desired widget type and variant
- The widget is added to the next available empty row in the grid
Available widget categories include:
- Card (big number widgets, charts, KPIs)
- Comment (rich text dynamically connected to dashboard content)
- Grid (data tables)
- Text (static markdown and text)
Note:
For detailed information about widget types and their configurations, see Dashboard Widgets.
Arranging Widgets
Widgets can be repositioned and resized to create the desired layout:
- Drag and drop widgets to move them to different positions in the grid
- Resize widgets by dragging the edges to adjust their size
- Widgets automatically snap to the grid for consistent alignment
Widget Edit Menu
Hovering over a widget reveals the widget edit menu with the following options:
- Clone: Creates a copy of the widget with the same configuration in the next available space
- Properties: Opens the widget properties panel to configure the widget
- Delete: Removes the widget from the dashboard
Configuring Widget Properties
Each widget can be customized through the properties panel, which opens in a flyout on the right side of the screen. The properties panel is organized into three sections:
Properties
Widget-specific properties control the appearance and behavior of the widget:
- Title: Set the display title for the widget
- Visual options: Configure colors, chart types, and display formats
- Display settings: Control how data is presented
Available properties vary by widget type. For example, chart widgets offer options for chart type, colors, and legends, while grid widgets have options for column visibility and formatting.
Query Arguments
Query arguments control what data the widget retrieves:
- Period settings: Specify how many prior or future periods to include
- Calculation options: Choose aggregation methods or calculation types
- Data source parameters: Configure which data sources to query
Arguments are specific to the widget's query type and control the data scope for the widget.
Filters
Widget-level filters provide fine-grained control over what data appears in the widget:
- Hierarchy filters: Select specific members from hierarchies like Entity, Account, or custom dimensions
- Measure filters: Choose which measures to display
- Member selection: Pick individual members or member sets
Widget filters work in combination with dashboard-level dynamic filters to provide maximum flexibility in data selection.
Note:
Widget filters are additive to dashboard filters. Where the same hierarchy is used on a dashboard and a widget, the widget filter will take effect.
Best Practices for Dashboard Design
When building dashboards, consider the following:
- Start simple: Begin with a few key widgets and add more as needed
- Use clear names: Give widgets and dashboards descriptive titles
- Group related widgets: Place related information near each other in the grid
- Test with filters: Verify the dashboard works correctly with different filter selections
- Consider the audience: Design dashboards for the specific needs of the intended users
- Balance detail and overview: Mix summary widgets with detailed grids for comprehensive views
Saving and Publishing
Once the dashboard is configured:
- Click Save to make the dashboard available to all workspace users
- The dashboard appears in the dashboard list for all users
- Users can immediately begin viewing and interacting with the dashboard
Changes to existing dashboards:
- Edits to dashboards are saved using the same Save button
- Saved changes are immediately reflected for all users
- Consider communicating significant changes to dashboard users
